I have always had a passion for designing and constructing. Structural engineering in particular really clicked for me when I went on a job shadow of a structural engineer as part of a middle school project. I saw a SAP model for the first time and toured the new Seattle Transit Tunnel, and I knew the field was a perfect fit for me.
I am an amateur board game designer.

I started out interested in architecture and began junior college with the plan to pursue an architecture degree. However, my first year at junior college I really enjoyed the physics courses and the higher-level mathematics. What tipped the scales for me was when I came across the architectural engineering degree at Cal Poly, SLO. The program was primarily structural engineering with architectural design thrown in. It combined aspects of both the things that interested and challenged me. The Cal Poly ARCE program then led me fully down the path to structural engineering.

Problem solving has always been a good fit for me, and in school I loved working in a field where we can touch the materials that we’re working with. Being entrusted with solving problems in the buildings where people live and work and run their businesses is a privilege.
I got to ride my bike alongside Robin Williams for a short stretch. He was funnier than I could ever hope to be, and it turns out he could ride faster too.
By bike – especially on a Tuesday night in the summer passing by Lake Union.

I enjoy building things, and understanding how they work. I also come from multiple generations of contractors that had me growing up in the construction industry.

Degenkolb meets the demands of renovation and rehabilitation projects in several ways: Sensitively preserving important architectural features; Creatively finding an effective solution to seismic weakness; Using the expertise gained from on-site evaluations, and therefore knowing which strengthening methods have failed and succeeded after major earthquakes during the last sixty years.
