Columbus Crew MLS Stadium

WHAT WE DID

Analyzing, sequencing and erecting a unique canopy atop this new soccer-specific stadium for Crew supporters.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

This new 20,000-seat 430,000 SF stadium hosts Major League Soccer, FIFA and US National Soccer team matches, as well as concerts and community events. The venue includes an outdoor plaza, multi-purpose field club, loge box seating, lounges, suites, a team store, concessions and a beer garden.

For our client Ben Hur, Degenkolb’s team provided erection engineering services as well as canopy truss rigging and lifting plans for the new stadium. Degenkolb also provided recommendations for metal deck installation to provide stability for raker and precast stadia erection in the lower bowl.

Ben Hur’s team planned for cranes to move around the perimeter of the seating bowl to erect the shade canopy with its 100-foot cantilevered trusses over the lower bowl. The canopy consisted of 67 trusses, weighing up to 28,000 lbs. each. Degenkolb engineers worked closely with Ben Hur to sequence the erection of the double cantilever structural design of the four unique canopy corners. Degenkolb analyzed the erection of the complex corner framing for truss stability, and reviewed crane reach and clearances for our client.
