City of Santa Monica Hazardous Building Evaluation
Performed a survey of city buildings to identify potential seismically vulnerable structures including non-ductile concrete and pre-Northridge steel moment frame buildings.

Soft Story Buildings
A soft or weak story wood-framed building is a multi-story wood structure where the first story is substantially weaker and more flexible than the stories above due to lack of walls or frames at the first floor.

Seismic Engineering

Degenkolb’s roots go to seismic engineering and what that field means for community resilience.

All Services
Pre-lease/Pre Purchase Investigations

Whether you are looking for a PML level study, or want to understand the full extent of a potential assets condition, Degenkolb’s experts in existing buildings can tailor an assessment.

Seismic Evaluation

Existing buildings are evaluated based on national seismic guidelines such as ASCE-31, FEMA 351, and FEMA 356 which allow careful examination of existing structural and nonstructural systems with consideration of the seismic performance goals set by the VA. For example, in most office buildings where the primary seismic concern is the protection of occupant safety, a lower performance level is normally acceptable. Where operations continuity is important, for example in a medical center, a higher performance level such as immediate occupancy may be appropriate as this addresses the seismic bracing of important medical equipment inside the building. Degenkolb will guide the VISN through the many available options and work toward the most economical solution.

Seismic Inventory Programs

Degenkolb has extensive experience in working on large building inventories and creating detailed databases that also provide decision-makers with “big picture information.” Earthquake engineering consulting services to support the company objectives relative to regional and global seismic risk. Services include the development of seismic standards for new and existing buildings for various uses and occupancies, pre-purchase and pre-lease investigations, peer review and post-earthquake response and training.

Seismic Ordinances

Degenkolb is advocating for seismic resiliency across our communities. Look below for information on ordinances in areas that we operate as well as educational information on the definition of the types of buildings affected.

Seismic Retrofit

Upgrades are designed to improve seismic performance to levels consistent with client goals related to safety and business continuity considering budget constraints, construction phasing, and ongoing building operations, and are based on current national consensus standards.  A specialty is the upgrade of facilities with critical operations.  In such cases, we bring value to owners and decisions makers through our ability to communicate risk and risk mitigation options.

Seismic Risk Assessment

Risk Assessment provides a high level determination of potential seismic risk posed to a building generally through building observation and document review. The assessment generally does not include a seismic evaluation of a specific
