Ruby is a structural engineering firm based in Bingham Farms, MI (outside of Detroit). They were founded in 1984 to provide structural engineering to the steel construction industry. Ruby is organized around services which are Construction Engineering (including Heavy Lift and Erection Engineering), Building Design, Structural Analysis/Reinforcement, and Connection Design. As structural steel specialists, they serve all markets, with the primary being industrial and automotive manufacturing. Beyond design, their primary practice is construction engineering.
Ruby is licensed to practice in 42 states, the District of Columbia, and 3 Canadian provinces. Ruby’s clients are primarily construction managers/design builders, steel fabricators, and erectors, and architects.

Why did you go into structural engineering?
As a young child and teenager I was always interested in building things and enjoyed the fact that you could see and touch structural engineering. In my early childhood I worked with my father and brother to build a little cabin in Northern Wisconsin. I guess that experience always stuck with me and created a desire to build bigger buildings. I now spend more of my time on business issues than actually designing and building buildings but in my personal life I am still very hands on and enjoy doing my own small scale construction projects.
Little Known Fact
Just like any other good cheese head (I hail from Green Bay), I am a die-hard Packers fan.
Question of the Day
What’s your favorite way to get to work?
By airplane of course. Alaska airlines appreciates my business. My primary residence and family are in Seattle but I travel extensively to all of the Degenkolb offices.

Why did you go into structural engineering?
I started out interested in architecture and began junior college with the plan to pursue an architecture degree. However, my first year at junior college I really enjoyed the physics courses and the higher-level mathematics. What tipped the scales for me was when I came across the architectural engineering degree at Cal Poly, SLO. The program was primarily structural engineering with architectural design thrown in. It combined aspects of both the things that interested and challenged me. The Cal Poly ARCE program then led me fully down the path to structural engineering.
Little Known Fact:
A classic car and hotrod enthusiast, he enjoys spending time working on his own classic ’56 Chevy he purchased his senior year of high school, and has been restoring ever since.

Why did you go into structural engineering?
When I entered college, I originally was in the mechanical engineering department at Berkeley, interested in the sub-discipline of petroleum engineering (mostly because this was a few years after the energy crisis of the mid 1970’s). After learning more about what mechanical would entail, and realizing that this wasn’t going to be a good fit for my interests, I switched into Civil Engineering. Once I began taking classes in the various disciplines of Civil, I determined that structural would be the best for me, especially living in California with our exposure to earthquakes.
Little Known Fact
I am a 3rd generation San Franciscan and have never lived more than 20 miles from the City. I’ve also coached little league baseball for 30 years, which is finally coming to an end.

Why did you go into AEC industry?
I didn’t aim to go into the AEC industry. It just happened that way. I had worked with Degenkolb’s then-CFO elsewhere and part of my work involved reviewing contracts. When he joined Degenkolb, he saw a need for contract review and reached out to me. He described the impressive individuals who worked at Degenkolb and I was hooked.
