Degenkolb designed the seismic upgrade and renovation of a two-story concrete structure with a number of structural and non-structural elements being precast concrete. The building was originally constructed in 1965. The design for the remodel will follow the ASCE 41-13 Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Buildings and the UC Seismic Safety Policy.

Why did you go into structural engineering?
During summers in high school, I volunteered for Habitat for Humanity in eastern Washington. I’ll never forget the feeling of accomplishment; seeing the house take shape as we framed the walls, and lifted the trusses into place. This love of building, paired with an affinity for physics and math, and structural engineering was a perfect fit.
Little Known Fact
I once did a solo bike trip down the coast of Tasmania. Saw plenty of wombats, wallabies and echidnas, but no Tasmanian devil!

Why did you go into structural engineering?
My father is an architect who taught and encouraged me to build things. That interest in building developed from personal construction projects, to going to school to understand how building work, to helping my clients design the projects they need and desire.

I enjoy running and doing my own construction projects at home.

What’s your favorite way to get to work?
Casual Carpool as you can often have an interesting conversation with someone you wouldn’t normally get to meet.
