Wayne County Community College Health and Wellness Center

WHAT WE DID

Designing a new campus structure to support community wellness.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

This new two-story, 80,000 SF health and wellness center represents an exciting new campus addition in Detroit. The center provides educational space for health science degree programs such as fitness training, sports management, sports medicine, kinesiology, physical therapy and sports conditioning. Students and community members alike can access to the new facility, which will also include fitness training areas, a gymnasium and a café.

Ruby provided structural design to architect Hannah-Neumann/Smith, which included primarily structural steel columns and beams. The gymnasium roof included long span steel trusses, with steel beams and girders as the remainder of the facility’s roof system. Ruby’s engineers developed a customized exposed truss for the gymnasium’s interior based on the designer’s requests to avoid a spray fireproof look that was inconsistent with the architect’s vision.
