I was fortunate to spend several summers as kid helping my grandfather, Harold, a lifelong contractor, on projects around his house. We built bird houses, well covers and all sort of odds and ends. I even asked my parents to call me “Little Harold” for a few years. In high school I was also fortunate to have a brilliant and slightly eccentric physics teacher named Doc Michaels, who helped me realize the amazing world around us, specifically statics and dynamics. Who knew you can calculate how long it will take for a bowling ball to fall from the roof of our gymnasium! Mix these together and I guess you get a structural engineer.
