Degenkolb provided limited peer review services relative to various renovations of the UCSC Student Union
UC Santa Cruz, Student Union, Seismic Corrections
Renovated and seismically retrofitted two wood pole buildings that provide flexible student lounge and meeting space as well as student organization offices on campus. Each building is situated on a slope surround by redwood trees and provides pleasant outdoor decks for student interaction and a new large deck for more formal gatherings. The buildings house student run and student support groups including, Student Organization Advising & Resources, the Student Union Assembly, Engaging Education (e2 program), the Bike Co-Op, and five student ethnic organizations. Degenkolb’s retrofit schemes improve the seismic performance of the buildings to a Good rating.

Why did you go into structural engineering?
I originally wanted to be an architect. My dad was a structural engineer and he used to teach classes at UC Berkeley’s School of Architecture. I would occasionally go with him. I really liked seeing how things were put together. Dad insisted that I go into structural engineering. It’s been a great career. I still get to work around wonderful architects and I really understand how to put things together.
Little Known Fact
One of my bucket list items is to do a triathlon. I’m an avid swimmer, so I just need to get the other two.
Question of the Day
What hobby would you go into if time and money weren’t an issue?
I’d either be a quilter on Etsy or write crossword puzzles.
