North Elementary School, New Classroom Building
Degenkolb provided structural engineering for the New Classroom Building at North Elementary School in Tracy, CA. The new, 25,000-square-foot, two-story classroom structure includes administrative offices, nine classrooms, four Kindergarten classes, a seismically separated 3,800-square-foot library, and ancillary spaces. Both structures are wood-framed with a lateral resisting-system consisting of wood shear walls.

Why did you go into the AEC industry?
It just happened that I was looking for a full-time position while attending university classes at night. I was referred to the firm and began my introduction into the AEC industry. Since then, I have enjoyed learning about the fascinating world of structural engineering.

Why did you go into Engineering?
In high school I loved my drafting classes. My teacher told me to switch to the engineering side as he saw it as a more lucrative profession.

Apple... I don't think I could switch over as I have been brain-washed to think that Apple governs over all.

Why did you go into structural engineering?
I originally wanted to be an architect. My dad was a structural engineer and he used to teach classes at UC Berkeley’s School of Architecture. I would occasionally go with him. I really liked seeing how things were put together. Dad insisted that I go into structural engineering. It’s been a great career. I still get to work around wonderful architects and I really understand how to put things together.
Little Known Fact
One of my bucket list items is to do a triathlon. I’m an avid swimmer, so I just need to get the other two.
Question of the Day
What hobby would you go into if time and money weren’t an issue?
I’d either be a quilter on Etsy or write crossword puzzles.

Why did you go into Engineering?
I have always looked at the world around me—the buildings, the vehicles, even my pencil at school, and wondered, "How exactly did they build that?" And now in my career, I am using what I have learned to "deconstruct" those things and find the truth behind architectural and structural damage.
What was your career like before joining Degenkolb?
I've been in the Sacramento construction industry for more than 30 years. I started doing forensic engineering investigations after joining Barrish Pelham in 2003. My first investigations involved settlement damage, cause & origin reports, and burned truss repairs. Since then, the types of investigations have broadened to include moisture intrusion and building envelope issues, equipment failures, foundation salvageability studies, and ADA/Accessibility condition assessments. Since Barrish Pelham became part of Degenkolb, I've been excited to broaden that expertise and service a much larger client base along the entire West Coast.
Little Known Fact
I am an avid rugby fan and played for about 14 years! I also enjoy throwing darts. I may have been English in a former life!
