Why did you go into structural engineering?

I have always had a passion for designing and constructing. Structural engineering in particular really clicked for me when I went on a job shadow of a structural engineer as part of a middle school project. I saw a SAP model for the first time and toured the new Seattle Transit Tunnel, and I knew the field was a perfect fit for me.

Why did you go into Structural Engineering?

Soon after transferring to UC Berkeley, I joined the Steel Bridge Team. I really enjoyed my experience with the team so pursuing a career in structural engineering seemed like the right fit for me.

Why did you go into Structural Engineering?

Early on I realized I was a problem solver. Before college, I narrowed it down to two professions: medicine and engineering. I concluded that above all else, I enjoyed mathematics and analytical thinking. I’ve always gotten great satisfaction from managing and seeing a project through from beginning to end, and I prefer being part of a team where the diverse skills and strengths of our team members complement one another.

I taught Statics and Concrete Design courses at Portland State University.

What hobby would you go into if time and money weren’t an issue?

Soaring (also known as flying a glider or sailplane).

Why did you go into structural engineering?

I always wanted to be involved with the design of buildings and turn ideas into reality. Structural engineering was the best fit with my academic interests in high school and college.

I immigrated to the United States from Taiwan when I was 13, and grew up in Maryland.

Why did you go into structural engineering?

I grew up loving math and physics and building things with my older brother. When he went into civil engineering and brought home assignments from college, I was immediately drawn to the structural ones. Growing up the Bay Area I always wanted to work in SF and loved the idea I could contribute to the skyline, so it all came together with structural engineering.

I’m an avid sewer and crafter and love trying out new projects.

What were you going to be when you grew up?

I distinctly remember wanting to be an ambassador to Japan (mostly so I could meet Sailor Moon). I even convinced my parents to let me take a DVC College for Kids course in Japanese in 4th grade to help my chances. I was not very good at it, but I can still count to 10.
