Is it a trope for a structural engineer to talk about how they were influenced by Legos growing up? Aside from the Legos, I also remember being fascinated by an exhibit on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge at the Liberty Science Center in Port Liberty, New Jersey. The exhibit used a rope ladder, suspended from floor to ceiling in the building’s atrium, to show how standing waves could propagate along a slender structure. I remember watching the video of the bridge and being amazed that something so massive could be set into motion to that degree. It was my first glimpse into structural dynamics, and the first step toward a career in structural engineering.
