When I was a child, my father would sometimes share his memories from the 1953 Paphos, Cyprus earthquake. His stories about the human suffering and the damage to the adobe houses in his village made a big impression on me. I loved math and physics in high school, but it was not until I took a structural analysis class in college that I realized that my love of problem solving and my concern about earthquakes were both pointing me in the same direction. Structural engineering was, and is, a perfect fit for me.
