Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford Health
The new pediatric hospital at Stanford Health adds 521,000 sf, features two connected five-story towers on a three-story podium. Its “Z” shape allows space for gardens and provides every room a view of nature. The irregularity of the building’s plan and elevation, and its location in a high seismicity area, required extraordinary analysis and design solutions. Steel moment frames along the towers’ exterior grids maintain unobstructed patient room views of the of healing gardens and green space.
Several of the building skin elements and the wind turbine are the first of their kind to be approved for hospital use in the state. The approval paved the way for incorporation of Structural Silicone Glazing (SSG) requirements in the 2013 California Building Code. The pioneering design resulted in the first LEED Platinum children’s hospital in California.

Why did you go into structural engineering?
My high school physics teacher, Doc Michaels, and grandfather, Harold Holman. Doc Michaels was an incredibly dynamic and a bit eccentric teacher who first exposed me to statics and dynamics and how you could calculate how long it would take a bowling ball to fall from the top of our high school gymnasium. My grandfather was a lifelong contractor who let me tag along and help out on many small projects around his house. I even asked my parents to call me “Little Harold” for a couple years.

Why did you go into Engineering?
I grew up helping my dad wrenching on his vehicles (ok, mostly holding the flashlight). I was also good in math and science and as a plus I liked to draw so it felt like a very natural thing to do. After so many years in the industry I am happy to say I picked something that I am not only good at but really enjoy doing.
Little Known Fact
I love to work with my hands and therefore own a ton of tools that I use to work on my own cars, bikes, and house. A good weekend for me would involve fixing something.
What hobby would you go into if time and money weren’t an issue?
I love to spend my free time off-roading so if I had more time, I would do a lot more of it.

Why did you go into structural engineering?
After working in IT for 5+ years, I wanted to do something that produced more tangible results. I always enjoyed building & design in addition to math and science. Structural engineering seemed like a perfect combination of those skills. I love the fact that I can see a building and know that I had a role in creating it.

Why did you go into Engineering?
I always wanted a job that used what I was best at: math, science, problem solving, etc. I searched through many types of jobs in high school and couldn’t find where I felt like I fit until I drove past a construction site and it clicked. From that moment on I wanted to be a structural engineer, and I never wavered.

Why did you go into structural engineering?
Structural engineering allows me to use the creative side of my brain along with the analytical. Designing structural details can be similar to art, you have to think about how all the components go together, but then you get to use physics and math to back it up. Also, I love seeing my designs get built!
Little Known Fact
I wanted to be an artist, even took some college level art classes, until I was 16 but then decided I should switch to engineering because I like my math and physics courses so much
What hobby would you go into if time and money weren’t an issue?
I would travel around the world! My husband and I try to visit another country each year (depending on the pandemic) and most recently went to India and Croatia.

Why did you go into structural engineering?
I had an ‘aha’ moment in a second year mechanics of materials class taught by Mr. Robert Craig in the Civil Engineering Department at Cal Poly. It was a challenging class, but the way he taught it from a practicing engineer perspective forced me to really understand the fundamentals, and more importantly, for the first time in my academics the technical material was directly linked to real life situations. That was inspiring and drove my curiosity in the direction towards structural engineering.
Little Known Fact:
I was born in Norway. After graduation from University of Oslo, my father brought the family of four for a three week vacation and we never left. I have brought my family of five to visit relatives several times over the years and we thoroughly enjoy the natural beauty of the country, family traditions, and boat trips to the islands on long summer nights. It’s amazing how connected we can be while so far away.

What hobby would you go into if time and money weren’t an issue?
Travel and garden. With our third child now in his second year at UCSB, Mary and I are empty nesters and have much more available time. We took advantage last summer and traveled to Prague, Florence and Rome for the first time. We will still focus our fall on water polo enjoying the camaraderie with other parents travelling to support UCSB. Go Gauchos!!

Why did you go into structural engineering?
Problem solving has always been a good fit for me, and in school I loved working in a field where we can touch the materials that we’re working with. Being entrusted with solving problems in the buildings where people live and work and run their businesses is a privilege.

I got to ride my bike alongside Robin Williams for a short stretch. He was funnier than I could ever hope to be, and it turns out he could ride faster too.

Why did you go into Engineering?
I figured out at UC Davis that I wanted to be an engineer and not a chemist rather quickly. I then tried to transfer to the College of Engineering. As part of the application to transfer, I had to pick an engineering field as my specialty. Because it was an impacted department, the only time the University would let me enter civil engineering was when I transferred into the College. I loved architecture and buildings so I said “why not” and applied to be a civil engineer. I then took statics and from that point on, I knew I had found my calling in structures.
Little Known Fact
My longest walk to date is almost 250 miles long. If you have never taken a walk in the woods on the John Muir Trail, do it. it is an experience that will change your life.
