Chris D. Poland, Senior Principal, Chairman Emeritus, Retires from Degenkolb Engineers

40 Years Legacy of Leadership and Mentorship in Structural Profession

Degenkolb Engineers announces the retirement from the firm of 40-year seismic engineering veteran, Chris D. Poland. Poland has been with the firm since 1974 and served as CEO from 1990 until 2010.  He served as Chairman of the Board until 2013.

“Not since the original founders of the firm, have we had leadership that so defined the culture and character of Degenkolb Engineers,” said Stacy Bartoletti, CEO and President. “During Chris’ 20 year tenure as CEO, the firm tripled in size, delved into new markets, and expanded services. All of our current principals in the firm benefited from Chris’ leadership. As we approach our 75th year milestone, the firm is grateful to Chris’ legacy of industry leadership and mentorship. We look forward to future collaborations and wish Chris the best in this next exciting stage of his life.”

Since 2010, Bartoletti has served as the firm’s fifth CEO and President. Along with a dedicated nine member board of directors and management committee, Bartoletti continues to position the firm as the premier structural and earthquake engineering firm on the West Coast.

A passionate seismic safety advocate, Poland has held numerous local and national leadership positions including past Chair of the congressionally mandated Advisory Committee to the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program, and current Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Structural Safety of Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Facilities. As Chair of the 100th Anniversary Earthquake Conference in San Francisco in April 2006, he shared the stage with California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Senator Dianne Feinstein in an internationally covered event that brought the nation to think proactively about earthquake danger. He served as the Chair of the American Society of Civil Engineers Seismic Rehabilitation of Existing Buildings Standards Committee completing both ASCE 31 and ASCE 41, both standards for the evaluation and rehabilitation of existing buildings that are used by engineers worldwide.  He serves on the Board of Directors for the San Francisco Urban Planning and Research Association, co-chairs its Resilient City Initiative and led the publication of “The Disaster Resilient City” which defines the key steps the City needs to take to be disaster resilient. Poland also served on the Board for the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce and continues co-chair the San Francisco Lifelines Council with City Administrator Naomi Kelly.

“It has been a pleasure to have spent 40 years with Degenkolb,” said Chris Poland. “During my years at Degenkolb, the firm has become one of the most well-regarded and thought-leading structural engineering and earthquake engineering firms in the nation. As Degenkolb enters its 75th year, the firm is positioned for continued success.”

Poland was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering in 2009, is a Fellow of the American Council of Engineering Companies and the American Society of Civil Engineers Structural Engineering Institute. He is an honorary member of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute and the Structural Engineers Association of California.

Dedicated to the principles of community seismic resiliency, Poland will continue to provide consulting services related to developing and implementing programs and policies needed to achieve community resilience as well as earthquake engineering related to individual projects.
