Degenkolb was prime consultant for the design team on this design-build seismic upgrade of a two-story, 126,000 square foot office and production building. In order to limit impacts to the ground-floor production operations, an exterior strengthening scheme was developed to add lateral strength and reduce building drift. Four exterior buttresses incorporate buckling-restrained braced frames are connected to the existing building through new steel chords that span across the roof. By using the existing lateral system in the longitudinal direction, we only needed to use buttresses on one side of the building. This reduced cost and minimized impacts to existing walkways and utilities and eliminated impacts to the process utilities located on the roof.
