Served as engineer of record for both the seismic upgrade/renovation of the Compton Union Building and also the shoring for selective demolition and excavation support. Degenkolb’s detailed knowledge of the existing building was of benefit to the demolition contractor who was provided with responsive service and well-coordinated shoring designs. Post shores and shoring towers were utilized to support the floor structure while new interior openings were created. Helical piers were extensively used for underpinning, excavation support, and temporary shoring of column loads while several existing column footings were lowered approximately fourteen feet. This interior excavation resulted in an additional 3,500 square feet of functional space within the CUB.
